There’s a lot to cover here today, including some tips for newbies. Here’s a table of contents in case you want to jump ahead.

What is Tinder?

Tinder is the world’s most popular app to date for meeting people, with over 50 million users.

Tinder is an app that is free to use, which also has in-app purchases so that you can access some premium features.

With over 30 billion matches, and more than 1 million weekly IRL dates, you can think of them as your wingmate. Tinder is fun and easy for everyone to use!

How old do you have to be to sign up for Tinder? The minimum age requirement for Tinder is 18 years old.

If you sign up with a birthdate that shows you’re under 18 years old, you will be blocked and remain blocked until your ban expires. You can see amount of time you will be blocked for on the login screen.

How to install Tinder

Here’s a step-by-step guide to how you can install the Tinder app on your phone or tablet.

How to use Tinder

Match. Chat. Date.

The way you choose to use Tinder is completely up to you. As I said, you can think of Tinder as your own personal wingmate that always has your back.

You can use Tinder to find people in your area that could be your potential match, but you are the one who determines compatibility with the person Tinder recommended to you!

Once you’ve created your Tinder profile, it’s time to pick out some pictures for people to see and write your bio.

If you want some tips on how you can get more matches just by improving your picture game and bio, then you’re in for a treat. Keep reading!

Surely you’ve heard the phrase “You’re my swipe right” being tossed around in the past few years. That’s because Tinder has a swipe right feature that you use when you’re interested in a potential match.

So which way do should you swipe on Tinder? You swipe left if you’re uninterested in the person, and you swipe right if you want to match with them.

After you’ve created your profile, Tinder will start presenting you with some potential matches in your area. It’s up to you, after looking over their pictures and bio, if you want to swipe right to let them know you’re interested, or swipe left and move on to the next potential match.

when you swipe right meme

How do I match with someone on Tinder? Well, both you and your potential match have to swipe right on each other in order to start chatting.

This is convenient because you only chat with people that you’re interested in, and don’t get tons of messages from people you’re not interested in.

Once you both swipe right on each other, it’s time to start chatting it up.

To stand out of the crowd, you might want to open up with a joke, or something fun that relates to either the bio or pictures.

A simple “U up?”or “hey” might not get you any replies. Try to be original!

How to use Tinder without Facebook

One question I get all the time is, “Do you need to use Facebook to get on Tinder?”.

So let me explain.

If you want to use Tinder but don’t have a Facebook account, then I have bad news for you: it’s not possible. Up to this day, you can not create a Tinder profile without having a Facebook account.

If other people seeing you are on Tinder via Facebook is what you’re worried about, then fear no more. None of your Facebook friends have to know that you have a Tinder profile, and here’s how.

  • Create your Tinder account by linking your Facebook profile to it
  • Immediately go to your Facebook profile and click on “settings”
  • Once you’re in your settings, click on “apps”
  • Find Tinder in your list of apps and change your visibility settings from “public” to “only me”

Now your Tinder dating life is only visible to you on Facebook, so you don’t have to worry about any awkward Tinder related questions from your Aunt and Granny on Thanksgiving.

How to Get Matches on Tinder

Why am I not getting matches on Tinder?

sad gif

There are many reasons as to why you could not be getting Tinder matches.

But, in order to answer this question, I have to ask: are you getting fewer matches than normally or are you getting none at all?

If you aren’t getting any matches at all, you may have been Tinder shadowbanned.

Being shadowbanned by Tinder is the pits. There are lots of reasons why this might have happened.

You’ve been swiping right for everyone.

This is a big no-no, pal. When you swipe right on every profile, you’re messing with Tinder’s algorithm for showing your profile to others.

You’re basically spamming, and Tinder will make your profile close to invisible if you keep this act up. This goes for newcomers and OG Tinder stans alike. Swipe right only those who you are actually interested in.

Your profile isn’t your best work.

This isn’t anything personal. You could be the coolest, most attractive person alive, but some unflattering angles and a boring bio could be the end of your dating life. Ask a friend to take some poppin’ pics of you. Post some adventurous photos or something about your hobbies.

Spice up your bio and make it better than just “21. University of X. Class of 2022”. Tell a joke, or say something artsy about yourself.

You gotta stand out of the crowd to get some right swipes!

You’ve been reported too many times.

I feel like this goes without saying, but if you’re being reported on multiple occasions by other users, you’ll either be shadowbanned or completely banned. Some common reasons why people might report you are, you’re either spamming them, talking way too inappropriately to them, or you’re using a bot. So basically, all this to say, just be a cool human and avoid getting reported.

You’re faking your location.

One of Tinder’s premium paid features is Tinder Passport, which lets you choose any location in the world and swipe as if you were really there.

Since this is a paid feature and some people try to hack the system by using location changing apps, if you are constantly changing your location, Tinder is going to push your profile down deep, deep into the depths of the internet.

Your account is bugged.

Chances are slim, but sometimes it happens. If you think your account is bugged, try contacting Tinder’s support team or simply reset your account.

You’ve been waaay too picky about your potential matches.

Similarly to swiping right, if all you do is swipe left, then you’ve really made your number of potential matches drop drastically.

Play it cool when swiping and follow your gut instincts, while not being too picky about potential matches!

Follow our Tinder profile tips down below to make an irresistible profile!

Now that we have some clarity on why you’re not getting enough matches, let’s talk about what you can do to get a whole lot more!

Like we said above, it is crucial that you have an irresistible Tinder profile. Swiping a profile happens within a matter of seconds. You gotta get people’s attention within that time frame.

Since you only have a few seconds to make a great first impression, you need to make sure everything is ?on ? point.

So here are some tips and tricks for guys and girls to get more matches on tinder!

A Huge Tinder Profile Photo Tip

Our biggest piece of advice that we could give to both men and women is this:You need to smile!

When you smile, you look approachable and kind. According to what Tinder’s statistics are telling us, people are 14% more likely to swipe right if you’re smiling. A 14% higher chance of a swipe right from simply smiling? Sign me up!

They also recommend looking straight into the camera, but not like a weirdo. Just a casual, dreamy gaze will do. When you smile, you’re automatically giving people a sensation of trust. Make your profile warm by flashing off those gorgeous pearls!

Alright, now that we’ve covered my biggest piece of advice to give to you, let’s get into specifics.

Tinder tips for guys

Since it only takes a person a matter of seconds to form an opinion about you, you gotta be quick, charming, and to the point. Here’s how you can do that.

Bio

Let’s start by saying this: just by having a bio at all, you’re doing better than 30% of men on Tinder. Just by having a bio, you increase your swipe chances by 60%. Make yours stand out and you’ll do even better. Here’s how to win:

Lead with a funny one liner. Make up your own or look or steal one of these hilarious Tinder 1 liners.

Try to end with a call to action. This sounds super professional and “market-y”, but trust me. Call to actions work. Tell them to swipe right pretty bluntly and tell them why, by being clever, and watch your swipe rights go crazy.

Mention your job or education. Not in a boring way, necessarily. Like one respiratory therapy student I saw wrote “pretty enough to take your breath away, smart enough to bring it back.” Try something like that!

Photos

Women only need 1/10th of a second to create an opinion about you based on your primary photo alone, so let’s talk about the Tinder photos you’re itching to upload to your profile. You might think you look dope, but take a second glance at them after you read some of these tips.

Smile. As we said, smiling will increase your chance of someone swiping right on your profile by 14%. Be inviting!

Take off your shades. Even though you’re really happy about how you turned out in your hiking trip photo, your sun glasses are blocking your eyes. And according to Tinder, wearing sunglasses in your profile photos decreases right swipes by 12%. Caveat: an occasional pick with sunglasses is acceptable, if it’s a full body shot.

Wear a color that’s going to stand out. Mashable performed a study based on 12,00 Tinder photos and found these shocking numbers about what people are wearing: 72% of men and 56.2% of women on Tinder wear neutral colors in their profile photos.

By simply uploading a pic of you in a bright color, you’ll stand out of the crowd and increase your right swipe dramatically.

Upload an up-close selfie. You primary picture should be a picture of you alone, so that others aren’t wondering which person you are in the photo. By uploading a high-quality selfie with a clean contrasting background, you’ll be setting yourself up for success. Slap a filter on that picture and you’ll really be doing yourself a favor. Don’t overdo it, though: if you look better in your profile then you do IRL, your chances of a second date will plummet!

Upload a full-body shot. 100%, you should upload photos that you feel great in and feel your best. A full-body shot makes your profile feel real and legit and more trustworthy.

Post a photo of you at a social event. Use a picture from the last night out with your friends or you dancing at a concert. Show your fun side.

Post a photo of you doing something you love. Hobbies make up a huge part of who you are. Be sure to upload a picture of your doing something your passionate about, like hiking, swimming, building, dancing, painting, or whatever it is you like to do.

Swiping

No one wants to see you be shadowbanned on Tinder.

That’s why you can’t swipe right on every single profile you see. Tinder will look at you as spam and essentially bury your profile if you only swipe right.

You should swipe right on profiles you would genuinely be excited to match with, and be pretty generous with your left swiping.

Don’t only swipe left. Just be true to your instincts and swipe according to your feels.

Swipe on Sunday afternoon. It’s when the community is most active!

The first message you send

The first message you send is going to determine a huge part of the way things are going to play out.

Don’t write a desperate message to your match, but also, don’t don’t be so painfully boring or blunt that no one wants to talk to you.

Lead with a gif. Read your matches profile and try to send something clever, like something relating to one of their interests they mentioned in their bio. By sending a gif, you’re 30% more likely to get a reply!

Be yourself. You should always be yourself. You deserve to be liked for who you are, so be authentically you. The right person will see you for who you are, no matter what.

Tinder tips for girls

Pictures say a thousand words when your tinder bio only lets you write 40 (or 500 characters). Be creative and take advantage of the pictures you can post.

Photos

Girlfriend, please smile! By now you already know that just by simply showing off your enchanting smile, you increase your right swipes by 14%. Absolutely, post those instagram baddie photos, but don’t forget to be approachable and have some fun.

funny tinder bio

Everyone likes a funny Tinder bio.

Look into the camera. When you show off that show-stopping smile of yours, make sure you look into the camera. It’s basically the closest thing you can get to virtually looking into someone’s soul. A dreamy lil gaze into the camera while smiling, is ??. In the words of the great Tyra Banks, you gotta smile.

Make sure your photos represent you. You don’t need to put up a front. You deserve to be liked for you, just the way you are. If you’re the life of the party, show it. If you like to go hiking and connect with nature, show that side of you! Just be you.

Post multiple pictures of your different hobbies. Yeah, selfies are cute. But have you ever seen an insanely attractive person with a great selfie game also posts pictures of themselves playing with a dog or rock climbing? ?? Like I was saying, a selfie is great, but make sure you add some pictures of yourself doing something interesting or something you love to do!

All this to say, make sure your first picture has lots of color in it, and the rest of them are of you doing things you genuinely love to do. Don’t lead people on, but show off the best parts about you!

Don’t post misleading selfie’s. Wait, what? I thought you said selfies were great! Not if they’re all taken from those perfectly flattering angles, and with that special lighting that makes you look better than you do IRL out. Watch out, ladies: Those might get you a first date, but they won’t get you a second!

Don’t post photos in the same place. We love that mirror selfie game, but make sure your photos are from all over the place. You went on vacation this summer? Post it. You went out with the girls and got all glammed up this week? #postit!

Connect your Instagram to your Tinder. You absolutely need to do this. Since instagram is a no-limit photo gallery, you should really take advantage of this feature.

Enable smart photos. Let Tinder show off your most popular photos to potential matches by enabling smart photos.

Wear flashy colors! Tinder says that 72% of all users wear a neutral color in their first profile picture. Boring. It’s in our very being to be attracted to what’s different. When someone consistently keeps swiping left on boring colors and suddenly they see a profile with a huge pop of color on their screen, they’ll spend the extra minute reading what you have to say and looking at your other pictures.

Which brings me to my next point.

About your bio

Add emojis to your bio. We’ve all seen how people add sparkles, hearts, and stars to their instagram handle, and your Tinder bio is no exception. Decorate that thing up like there’s no tomorrow.

Write something witty and funny about yourself. Mention something about you, but do it in a creative way. Like, instead of saying you’re 21, say something like “born at a very young age. 21.”, or something like that!

Tinder bio example respiratory student

Got wit? Use it.

Be specific about what makes you special. Nobody knows you like you do you. You should celebrate and express your uniqueness in your own way. Talk about the things that make you stand out.

Make a list that is up for debate. A recent trend I’ve been seeing is writing things like “Cats > dogs, waffles < pancakes” etc, and at the end saying “don’t agree? Let’s debate.” This can be a great conversation starter and helps your potential matches have a fun conversation that you’ll both enjoy.
Write about your interests. Having an informational and cute bio is important because it can help lead people into knowing a little bit more about you, so they know what to first write you.

For more bio tips read our guide: How to Write the Best Tinder Bio that Will Make Anyone Swipe Right.

About swiping and liking

Just like I was telling the guys, you need to be careful about how much you swipe left or right. There’s no limit on how much you can swipe, but you don’t want to upset Tinder’s algorithm.

Swipe right on the people you’re genuinely interested in matching up with, and swipe left on your “absolutely-nots”.
And ladies, on Sunday night when you’re wearing a face mask and getting ready for the grind on Monday morning, don’t forget to swipe. Sunday’s are the most active days on Tinder, so get to swiping.

About the first message you send

Just like with your bio, you want to stand out of the crowd when sending your first message to your match.

Send something related to their bio. This shows you took to time to see what they’re into and made an effort to write them something they’re actually interested in.

Send a joke. Hit ‘em with your best one liner. It’s a classic move and if your joke is good, your chances of a reply just skyrocketed.

Send a gif. Like I mentioned before, sending a relevant gif raising your chances of a reply by 30%. So why not try it out and see how it works for you? Remember to read their bio and try to figure out what kind of gif they would appreciate, and then send away.

How to stay safe on and off Tinder

Even though the person you’ve been chatting it up with for a while now on Tinder seems nice, you’ve always gotta look out for you and your safety. You’re your own #1 and we want what’s best for you.

That’s why we recommend that once you’ve connected with someone and you’ve both agreed to meet up, that you screen them before hanging out. It’s only fair to both of you that you stay safe while you’re having fun.

While meeting someone you don’t know will always be taking some sort of a risk, one major way that you can stay safe while meeting up with your potential match on Tinder is to do some background checking on them.

You can do some research on a person by searching for them on www.dateid.com/search by typing in one of their social media user names, telephone number, first and last name, email address, or their DateID username.

When you do this, you’ll get an extensive search of them from gathering publicly available information about them from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, the sex offender registry, and more!

date id cyberstalking

You can also sign up and plug in your own socials to build trust and transparency with others and prove to people that you’re legit!

And that’s all, folks.

I hope you found everything in this article useful for you and helps you improve your tinder game. And remember: always stay safe when meeting new people!

And may the swipes be ever in your favor.

How old do you have to be to use tinder

In order to use Tinder, you need 18 years old. Don’t be fooled by the other articles you see online, saying you can be 13 to join. You need to be an adult. If you’ve been blocked from Tinder due to the age you entered when you signed up, you’ll have to wait for the time on the login screen to pass, and then try again.

Like I said above, you can’t have a secret Tinder profile, but you can hide it from your Facebook account. Just go onto your app settings and manage the privacy settings.

What is the best time to use Tinder boost?

If you want to use Tinder boost, then your best bet is to start using it at around 6PM, and use it until 10PM. At 10PM, users start to close out, so your best shot is anytime between 6 and 10 PM. And for the most ideal day of the week and time, try out Sunday at 9PM and see how that works for you. That’s when users are most active all week!
